Dr. Hihara

Research Activities and Interests:

  • Established the Hawaii Corrosion Laboratory.
  • Corrosion testing in Hawaiian micro-climates, which are some the most diverse on Earth, and soils (11 of the 12
soil orders are found in Hawaii). Corrosion mapping.
  • Corrosion behavior of advanced materials (e.g., metal-
matrix composites), advanced electronics (e.g., micro-electromechanical systems), and buried munitions.
  • Materials compatibility of metal alloys coupled to
monolithic ceramics, metal-matrix composites, polymer-matrix composites, and ceramic-matrix composites.
  • Development of hybrid ceramic-polymer (ceramer) films
    for corrosion barriers.
  • Development of corrosion sensors.
