Project Scope:
Silicon carbide/aluminum (SiC/Al) metal-matrix composites (MMCs) are candidate
packaging materials for electronic components. Low density and a coefficient of thermal expansion
relatively close to that of gallium arsenide make SiC/Al MMCs attractive for packaging. SiC/Al MMCs
are difficult to machine using conventional cutting methods since the hard SiC reinforcement particles
abrade and dull cutting tools. Electrochemical machining is a potential alternative machining method
since material removal is independent of the work-piece hardness. |
